20th Anniversary of the MGAQ
The beginning of the Myasthenia Gravis Support Group was an inaugural meeting held on 1st May 1991 at the then Early Street Historical Village at Norman Park and organised by Kath Ross and Gerald Hancock and was attended by sixteen interested people.
The Support Group was started with each attendee paying ten dollars as a member.
The group was incorporated as THE AUSTRALIAN MYASTHENIC ASSOCIATION IN QUEENSLAND INC on 4th March 1992, and then changed its name to the current one, MYASTHENIA GRAVIS ASSOCIATION OF QLD INC on 28th September 1995.
Incorporation has allowed the MGAQ to apply for a grant from Queensland Health to cover administration costs, including production of the monthly newsletter 'MessaGes', and to apply for Income Tax exemption and GST concessions from the Australian Taxation Office. It also allowed the MGAQ to be a Registered Charity.
The 1800 free call telephone number is a popular way of keeping in touch with members and there is always a cheerful volunteer to have a private conversation, give support and assure members that they are not alone.
